ChapterA specialization of Marketing Engineering, the role introduced by Profound ↗

Performance marketing,

Platforms run the auction and agents do the work. A PME owns what it all depends on: the creative going in, the decisions that steer it and the signal that proves what it returned.

Prove and act

Most roles stop at the proof.
A PME proves, then acts.

A dashboard says what happened. An analysis says whether it paid. The PME runs the whole loop: analyze, prove, decide, plan and act, in the stack the team already runs, and checks the result next week.

The model

Four layers. One role across all of them.

The three crafts are what a PME does. The four layers are where that work lives.

Layer 01 · Memory

The memory layer

What the business already knows.

Brand, past tests, margins and limits in one place, so every agent works from the same context.

Layer 02 · Agents

The agents layer

Decisions, carried out.

Agents watch every account, propose with evidence, act inside written limits and log each change.

Layer 03 · Decisions

The decisions layer

Where the next budget goes.

Budget rules, holdouts and the weekly ledger, judged on margin rather than on what a platform reports.

Layer 04 · Signal

The signal layer

Numbers you can trust.

Conversions and revenue sent back server-side, deduplicated and within consent. Every other layer reads from here.

What Is A Marketing Engineer?

A Marketing Engineer doesn’t do the marketing. They build the machine that does.
  • 01Automate the work marketers already do.
  • 02Build marketing that wasn’t possible before.

The loop engine

Learn the loop engine.

Three steps a PME runs every week, on every account: map the decisions, prove what works, then let agents run the routine inside limits.

01Map

Map the decisions

Every budget, creative and tracking decision gets an owner and the number it is judged on.

02Prove
HoldoutMarginServer-sideLedger
Incremental lift measured

Prove what works

Clean the signal, then test the biggest claim with a holdout before money moves.

03Run
Weekly rule

Move up to 10% between campaigns when marginal CPA beats target for 7 days.

Above that, a person approves.

Run the routine

Agents act inside written limits. Every call outside them stays human.

FAQ

Questions PMEs ask first.

Short answers to what PMEs ask most. The glossary has the long ones, with every neighbouring role defined and compared.

Is the performance marketer obsolete?

No, but running ads alone is no longer a job. Platforms automate more of the buying, so the work moves toward what goes into the auction and how results are read. Channel management becomes a shared baseline skill, and judgement stays with people.

What does a PME do all week?

Reads spend against real outcomes, decides where budget moves, ships the next round of creative, and keeps the systems behind all three running. Most of it becomes one weekly loop around a signed ledger.

Is a PME a developer?

No. A PME writes code where code beats the interface: scripts, API calls, pipelines and agents, often with AI coding tools. The goal is always a marketing outcome.

How is a PME different from a Marketing Engineer?

A Marketing Engineer builds systems across all of marketing. The PME is proposed here as its paid-media specialisation, judged on business outcomes. What is a Marketing Engineer? ›

Is this an official industry standard?

No. It is an open proposal for how to define the work. It becomes a shared standard only as practitioners and employers use it, challenge it and improve it. How changes work ›

Where do I start?

Take the skills check, then start with Chapter I: own the signal. Decisions and creative follow, and Chapter IV joins all three into one weekly loop. Start Chapter I ›
